How To Hang Lighting

We get a lot of questions about chandelier and pendant heights. We've got you covered! Here's our helpful FHI guide to hanging your lighting.

Chandelier Over Dining Table

We like to hang these between 30"-36" from the top of the table to the bottom of the chandelier. For lower ceilings, we will be closer to 30". For higher ceilings (9' and above) we will be closer to 36".

Pendants Over an Island

Your pendants should be approximately 30"-34" from the countertop to the bottom of the pendant, depending on the ceiling height. Typically, for 9' ceilings and higher, we hang pendants at 32".

Chandelier in the Center of the Room

At a minimum, these should be hung at least 7' from the floor to the bottom of the fixture. We bring them up higher for taller ceilings. For a 2-story ceiling, the rule of thumb is to hang the fixture higher than the plane of the second floor.

Lighting in Hallway or Entry

Always hang walkway pendants least 7' from the floor to the bottom of the fixture. For 8' ceilings, we start with 7' from the floor (resulting in a flush-mount or semi-flush-mount). For every additional foot in ceiling height, we add 2-3" to the distance to the floor. So, for a 9' ceiling, your pendant should be hung approximately 7'4 to 7'6" from the finished floor.
